Prayer for Muslims
When are the prayer times?
Prayer times are essential for Muslims. Visit the Thunder Bay Masjid prayer times to view today’s prayer timings and iqama (congregational prayer) schedules. You can also find the month’s prayer calendar there if you prefer to print it.
Where can I pray?
Thunder Bay offers several prayer spaces (musallahs) for Muslims:
- Thunder Bay Masjid
- Lakehead University MSA Prayer Hall
- Lakehead Law School Musallah
- Confederation College Musallah
- Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre Prayer Hall
Some of these spaces may require access codes or passes, which are available upon request.
Qiblah direction
In Thunder Bay, the qiblah (direction for prayer) is towards the northeast. In Thunder Bay, we use the IslamicFinder Athan app and we have our own iqama timings here.
Where can I make ablution (wudu)?
Most prayer spaces have wudu facilities, and public washrooms can also be used. Always ensure you leave the space clean and dry, especially in shared facilities.
Being part of the community
Muslim organizations and groups
Joining the local Muslim community is a great way to stay connected and prevent isolation. The following groups are active in Thunder Bay:

- Community WhatsApp groups: these provide updates on events, prayer times, and other relevant information.

Halal food
Halal butchers and stores
Thunder Bay doesn’t have a dedicated halal butcher, but halal meat is available in major stores like Walmart, Superstore, and Maltese Grocery. Common halal-certified brands include Sufra, Zabiha Halal and Mina.
Restaurants and eating out
There are a few halal-friendly restaurants in Thunder Bay, mostly located near Port Arthur. Always check with the restaurant for halal certification.
There are also vegan and vegetarian options; make sure they do not contain alcohol, though.
Education and schools
How to register your children
Thunder Bay now has a Muslim faith-based elementary school: Al-Khayr Academy! Head to their website to view more, or contact the Thunder Bay Muslim School Board for registration.
Thunder Bay also offers both public and Catholic schools.
Registration typically requires proof of residency, your child’s birth certificate, and immunization records.
The school year begins in September, and you can contact the Lakehead District School Board for more details.
Islamic educational resources
For supplementary Islamic education, the masjid sometimes offers Qur’an classes and Islamic studies programs for children and adults.
Important services
Opening a bank account
Most banks in Thunder Bay, such as RBC, TD, and CIBC, offer newcomer packages with perks like fee-free banking for your first year. Be sure to bring your passport, SIN, and proof of address.
Getting your driver’s licence
To drive legally in Ontario, exchange your current driver’s licence for an Ontario licence at a ServiceOntario centre. You may be required to take a written or road test.
Tax accountant after your first year
Tax services like H&R Block and local accountants can help with your first Canadian tax return. Filing your taxes is important to remain in good standing with the government.
Getting your healthcare card
If you have a work permit, you need to apply for an Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) card at a ServiceOntario centre. It’s best to apply as soon as you arrive.

Many Muslims live in Port Arthur, as it’s closer to the masjid, Lakehead University, and key amenities. Housing costs range between $1,000 and $2,500 for a two-bedroom apartment, depending on the location.
Transportation
Thunder Bay has a public bus system that runs year-round, although it may be challenging in the winter. Taxi services (Roach’s, Diamond) and Uride are common alternatives. For those looking to buy a car, dealerships like Marostica Subaru provide good options for new and used vehicles.
Food and places to stay
Temporary housing options include Airbnbs and hotels. Look for places near the masjid or Lakehead University if you prefer to stay close to the Muslim community.
Safety in Thunder Bay
Winter weather tips
Invest in high-quality winter clothing such as thermal jackets, boots, and gloves, as winter temperatures can drop to −30°C. Drive and walk slowly in snow to avoid accidents.
Dealing with isolation
As a newcomer, it’s easy to feel isolated. Connect with the local Muslim community, attend social events at the masjid, and keep in touch with family and friends back home to combat these feelings.

Walk-in clinics, pharmacies, and labs
Walk-in clinics are available for non-urgent medical issues. Pharmacies such as Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall offer prescriptions, and blood work can be done at LifeLabs.
Getting a family doctor or nurse practitioner
